The gameplay is more about collecting resources and building tools and gear and completing side activities and exploring a world filled with ruins and relics of an old long dead world.ĭays Gone is a zombie post apocalyptic game where you play as a biker who roams around an open world on your motorcycle. I won't go into why since that's a major spoiler but the world is actually filled with very tribal groups of people and lush environments that just oddly have machine based monsters and the people who are otherwise less technological have some clever tools from an older time. Horizon is a brilliant game that has a really great story that's very enticing and engaging and a really beautiful world but it's a pretty unique take on post apocalyptic. It's the heaviest on the RPG elements out of all these games. It's got pretty fun base building and some good story and pretty customizable characters. Fallout 4 is probably the most traditional form of a post apocalyptic world ravaged by nuclear war from a time when technology got more or less locked in the 50s. The world is still ravaged by zombies everywhere and argument could be made that this game really takes place DURING the apocalypse because the problem in question is still very much a thing people are struggling against.
Everyone is still struggling to survive and new societies haven't really started outside of isolated camps. Horizon Zero Dawn takes place a whole thousand years after the apocalypse. Fallout 4 takes place like 200 years after nuclear war ravaged an already alternate history earth. Though post apocalyptic, the apocalypse in question was MUCH more recent than in either of the others. You could replace the main narrative to make it a completely fictional fantasy planet and it wouldn't change the world or gameplay.ĭays Gone is a solid game and much better than reviews gave it credit for. The world has essentially restarted and though the story will teach you how the previous one ended, you're more living in a new one then the ruins of the old.
Horizon Zero Dawn is a good game with awesome gameplay and creatures, but it's more post post apocalyptic. It is THE post apocalyptic franchise and everything in it is closely tied to that in some way. If you're interested is specifically in exploring the post apocalyptic genre, than Fallout 4 is probably the best choice since that's the whole point of it.
